Cold Weather Policy

At our school, student safety is our top priority, especially during extreme weather conditions. Please take a moment to review our cold weather policy to ensure everyone stays safe and comfortable this winter.

When Do Students Stay Indoors?

  • Students will remain indoors during recess or outdoor activities when the temperature, including wind chill, is -25°C or colder.
  • We also monitor conditions where the temperature is warmer than -25°C but strong winds make it feel much colder. In these situations, we use Environment Canada’s Wind Chill Chart to make decisions.

Modified Outdoor Time

When conditions are borderline but still challenging, we may:

  • Reduce outdoor time from 30 minutes to 15 minutes, or
  • Cancel outdoor activities entirely if necessary.

How Decisions Are Made

Before each recess, our staff carefully evaluates the current temperature and wind chill using reliable weather sources. Our goal is to keep students safe while still providing opportunities for fresh air whenever possible.

Always Send Warm Clothing

Even if you assume the school will run indoor recesses, please ensure your child comes to school with warm clothing, including a coat, hat, gloves, and boots. In the event of an emergency evacuation, it’s important that every child is dressed appropriately for the weather.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us prioritize your child’s well-being during the winter months!

*Note: We draw our weather information using both Weather Network and Environment Canada as different sources can report different temperatures or update at different times.
